Why Physicians Want to Change Jobs

Career Advice

There are many reasons a physician might be looking to change jobs. Here are the top four:

Compensation & Growth

Much like workers in any career field, many physicians will reach a point when they’re ready to grow in their career. When physicians take on more responsibilities, they usually seek out higher compensation for their extra efforts. While looking into future positions, physicians should define what type of pay they would like but still leave room for flexibility. Many positions also include sign-on bonuses, relocation allowances, student loan reimbursement, and other benefits.

Burnout

Burnout is one of the most common issues among physicians and can take a heavy toll on both a personal and professional level. Physicians who have decided that their current environment is causing too much stress should try to find the source of that stress. This could be working too many hours, not working the right hours, high patient volumes, or poor coordination of workflow. Learning the cause of the burnout will help our recruiters know what details to look for when finding the right position.

Not Fitting in with the Work Culture

Fitting in with the right work culture can play a huge factor in physician satisfaction and success. When organizational culture and a physician’s preferences clash, many doctors find themselves leaving a practice to find one that’s more suitable to their needs. They should consider what values they look for in a practice, how they will socially be a good fit, what type of geographic location would be best for them, and other preferences such as choosing an employed or private practice.

Lack of Work/Life Balance

Often resulting in burnout, a lack of work/life balance can be very frustrating for physicians with families or long unpredictable hours. When looking for a new position, a physician should consider the ideal amount of hours that would work best for them, and if they would consider weekend or night shifts. Many practices are willing to be flexible with adjusting a schedule to fit the needs of the right candidate. Physicians are welcome to ask their recruiters about potential changes in working hours.
